So true! Whenever I see an advertisement telling me how much child needs something, I stop to ask who really benefits from my purchase? Nine times out of ten, it's Fisher-Price or Toys R Us, not my son.

Why can't we be this wise the first time around? Try convincing a first-time mom that she doesn't need the stuff. Maybe having a kid is such a scary proposition that we're willing to buy anything if it will make it less so.

Um- you do know that Sacajawea ended up essentially giving her son to Clark. Maybe she would have felt more able to rear him with some nice slings and dresser. Maybe she was just exhausted after all the hardships.<BR/><BR/>There's such a thing as a happy medium.

I would like to admit that I was one of the suckers that bought that Gymini Ultra Lights and Music Super Power Pad or whatever and it was a total dud. My son just stared at it, and by the time he could interact with everything, he was crawling away to go play with the dvd tower. I think you're onto something with your Sacajawea theory.
